Everyone needs to take extra care on Halloween, Oct. 31, when excited children in costumes are out in force. Motorists need to be extra careful during trick or treat hours, 6 p.m.-8 p.m., and parents should review safety rules with their children. The 75th Security Forces Squadron members will X-ray and examine candy for all Hill trick or treaters as part of its annual Pumpkin Patrol on Halloween night. Parents or guardians can bring their children's candy to the Youth Center, Building 883 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Crosswalk awareness is a public awareness and knowledge of laws governing the use of crossing roads. A crosswalk or pedestrian crossing is a designated point on a road at which some means are employed to assist pedestrians wishing to cross.
Security forces advise vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle users to acknowledge and to be aware of their responsibilities of new and current crosswalks around Hill Air Force Base. With so much construction at Hill, it is important that everyone is aware of new locations.
Winter is the most difficult driving season. Not only do you have snow and ice to deal with, but there are fewer hours of daylight as well.
As winter weather arrives, make sure your vehicle is in good condition. Make sure you have good snow tires and put them on early to avoid preventable accidents -- you don't want to get caught without them in the first snowfall. Never combine radial and non-radial tires on the same vehicle. On front-wheel drive cars, it's best to put snow tires or "all-season" tires on all four wheels, not just the front.
