Make your move at chess championship

Be sure to "check" your schedule and bring a "mate" to the annual Hill Air Force Base Chess Championship.

The championship will be June 8 in the Daedalian Room at The Landing. Registration begins at 11 a.m., and is free and open to active duty, retired, DoD civilians, and dependents age 18 and older.

Moving forward into hope

There were tears of sadness, hope and love as an Airman accounted her personal experience with sexual assault.

A large group, including commanders, victim advocates and community agencies, gathered at a luncheon on April 18 to heighten awareness of sexual assault and the effects it has on the victim as well as those around them. The luncheon was the capstone event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.



Panel addresses life in the Air Force for women

Women’s History Month kicked off with a panel discussion lunch and learn held in the chapel annex on Friday, March 1.

The panel, made up of five people, discussed women’s experiences with the military, with their diverse backgrounds shedding new light on the subject.

“I wanted to have people with various backgrounds to make it more interesting,” said Tech. Sgt. Tammy Butler, hostess of the lunch and learn. “I wanted people to be aware of how it is for women to be in the military, so they can see how they got through their situations.”

It was giggles and excitement as the fourth, fifth, and sixth-graders of Hill Field Elementary School wracked their brains to answer trivia questions during an assembly on Friday Feb 22.

In honor of African American History Month the children were brought in to the auditorium to answer questions in hopes of being one of the few lucky ones to win a McDonalds gift card. The trivia contest was set up by the African American History Committee.



Whoa, Nelly!

Several hundred people lined the streets from the Base Exchange to the Arts and Crafts Center in order to welcome Santa. Led by a team of Clydesdales, he came not in his sleigh, but on a bright red fire truck.

There was much anticipation as everyone waited for the tree lighting. After the countdown, base children flipped the giant light switch, the tree lit up and everyone cheered.

This was the first tree lighting for Col. Mary Brueggemeyer and her family who moved here in August.



Education for prevention

Having yearly mammograms, screening for cervical cancer and doing self breast exams at home, were the overall theme of this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon at the Landing, Wednesday, Oct 24.

Speakers at the event were Rudy and Jennifer Garza. The Garzas moved to Hill AFB in 2009. While here, Jennifer was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer at 26 years of age.



Beyond Expectations

Beyond Expectations was the theme of this year's Disabilities Luncheon held at the Landing on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Guest speaker of the event was Elise Hansen, who is nationally famous for being successfully separated from her conjoined sister.



SOFT TOUCH TO BE MISSED

The Bundles for Babies class held at the Airman and Family Readiness Center will be missing a homey touch the next few months.

Cindy Baldwin has been making blankets for the class for two and half years. But sadly due to cancer and upcoming radiation treatments, Baldwin has decided to take a hiatus until she can see how much energy she has. "I'm hoping to be back in November," said Baldwin. "But right now I'm still buying fabric to make the blankets."



Clearfield Air Force JROTC team takes first place in cyber competition

The Clearfield High School's AFJROTC Cyber Patriot team won first place at Utah's first annual Cyber Symposium Challenge in June. Beating out several college and professional teams.

The group participated in the Air Force Association's Cyber Patriot competition. After having placed multiple times they were looking for more competitions to enter. That is when they stumbled upon the Cyber Symposium Challenge.
