ACTION LINE: Safety near Hill AFB Exchange parking lot

ACTION LINE: Safety near Hill AFB Exchange parking lot

Q: The entrance to the Hill AFB Exchange is a safety hazard. Exiting the Exchange is OK, but entry to the Exchange is mainly through the gas station. The Exchange should have another entrance on E Avenue right after the gas station without going through the back of the gas station. My suggestion is to remove the center area just after the gas station to allow the Exchange customers and pharmacy customers a safe way to get to the Exchange. The other suggestion is to reprogram to lights at E Avenue and 6th Street to operate the way normal traffic lights operate or put in a roundabout to eliminate the traffic lights. The Wing Advocate, Denise Elbert, asked me to send this suggestion to you. She is outstanding!

A: Thank you for your interest in traffic safety in and around the Hill AFB Exchange. I agree gaining entry to the Exchange using the area behind the Shoppette is not preferred. The actual main entrance to the Exchange is farther north and across from 4th Street, adjacent to parking lot no. 1. This is the safest and preferred entrance into the Exchange parking lot.

Your suggestion of adding an additional entrance just north of the Shoppette along E Avenue is logical; however, in our current budget-constrained environment, it is cost-prohibited. The light signals at the intersection of E Avenue and 6th Street are already optimized given its design and traffic usage.

Lastly, the installation of a roundabout would also be cost-prohibited. I agree that Ms. Denise Elbert is an outstanding Wingman Advocate, and we appreciate her service to Team Hill. We appreciate you voicing your concerns and suggestions.
