The 2012 Hill AFB Chess Championship was held Saturday, April 28 at The Landing/Club Hill. The results are as follows:

Division 1, military competition: Senior Airman Joe Martinez won the title, by scoring three wins and no losses, and is the 2012 Hill AFB Active Duty Chess Champion. He won a close game against last year's defending champion Senior Airman Mike Tully. Both Airmen are assigned to the 388th Component Maintenance Squadron (CMS). Third place went to Chaplain's Assistant Staff Sgt. Anthony Gray.

Division 2, civilian competition: Tim Lane won the title, by scoring three wins and no losses, and is the 2012 Hill AFB Non-Active Duty Chess Champion. Donnie Davis, retired Air Force and The Landing shift supervisor, came in second and Val Sackman, civil service employee, took third place.

Kim Barney, retired school teacher, served as Tournament Director (TD). Barney has been actively involved in chess as a player and TD for over forty years. Christian Peal, The Landing manager, presented trophies and prizes to the winners.

Lane, retired Air Force from Hill AFB since 1996, started playing chess in junior high school and continued to play throughout his military career winning championships in the mid-80s while stationed in England and while serving in the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). An informal championship took place after Saturday's awards ceremony during which the competitors continued to play and he proudly remained undefeated.

The champions, including Lane, are looking for more competitors.
