Hill AFB library reopens after renovation

Over the past few months, the Hill AFB Gerrity Memorial Library underwent major upgrades to modernize and update the facility for users.

On Jan. 13, the grand reopening took place for excited patrons.

With approximately 80,000 library circulation materials, 60,000 patrons last year, and 6,000 registered users, this heavily trafficked base resource received a facelift after approval was granted in September.

The completed job includes new carpet and interior paint, a new front counter and new reading tables and chairs. The computer lab was relocated, and the children and teen areas redesigned. Crews created a family broadcast area (Skype room) for deployed military family members.

“We are hoping that by updating the library, it will bring in not only more patrons, but younger patrons, we hope by using our free Wi-Fi and computers, they will also explore the library and check out books to read or use our reference area to study,” said Dale Emmerson, the Force Development Flight Chief.

“Parents also bring their children in for storytime and our STEM events, which introduces and hopefully brings out the love for books in those children. We are also here to help patrons further their self-development and education with our study and research materials. Our goal is to make the library more like a community center, which will bring different people in and inspire personal interactions, learning, family fun and sharing of ideas.”

The mission of the library is: “To provide mission essential information and resources, to provide a variety of up-to-date resources that support professional military and voluntary educational programs, and to offer books, media, technology and programs that enhance the quality of life at Hill Air Force Base.”

Staff members hope users will agree that the updates align with the mission. For more information about the library, visit the Hill AFB Gerrity Memorial Library Facebook page.
