Pre-Deployment workshops offered

The Airmen & Family Readiness Center recently hosted a Pre-Deployment Workshop for spouses in the Base Chapel. On Sept. 10, spouses met in the Chapel to gather information about the opportunities and support available to them while their spouse is away. The group enjoyed a presentation about Airmen and family resources and had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns.

The Hearts Apart Support Group, newsletters, a free oil change, free child care, and Hill Heroes dolls/pillowcases are just a few of the resources available when a loved one is deployed.

With valid orders, spouses can receive a voucher for a free safety check and oil change at the Firestone on base. The Child Development Center also offers Give Parents a Break events where they offer four free hours of child care to parents who register their children. Free child care is also available for 16 hours for each of the following: before a spouse deploys, while they are away, and after they return.

The Hearts Apart Support Group offers fun activities for families such as a visit to the pumpkin patch, bowling, movies, etc. The A&FRC sends out a monthly newsletter for spouses that makes announcements, offers resources, and reminds of programs that can help.

As Airmen go through their pre-deployment processing, they have their photo taken and it is used to create deployment dolls or pillowcases for dependents to enjoy while they are away. The A&FRC also offers free access to computers with internet and webcams so spouses can email or Skype with their deployed spouse.

Key Spouses are also an important resource for dependents, as they can help provide encouragement, support, and information about various programs available on base.

“We are hosting this event to provide the spouses of deploying service members as much information as possible about the resources and programs available to assist them during this time,” said Colette Geiss of the A&FRC. “I am hopeful more awareness and information will lead to a larger number of families participating in our programs. I also hope these briefings will leave spouses feeling more secure with the knowledge that there are people, programs and resources to help them during their spouse’s absence.”

There are more workshops available for spouses to attend in the next few weeks at the Chapel: Sept. 22 at 10 a.m., Sept. 25 at 6 p.m., and Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. For more information, or to register and attend, please call the A&FRC at 801-777-4681.
