New smoking cessation benefits

New smoking cessation benefits

All Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plans will be providing comprehensive coverage in smoking cessation benefits beginning plan year 2011. According to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announcement regarding the change, new smoking cessation benefits will include:

  • Four tobacco cessation counseling sessions of at least 30 minutes or more provided for at least two quit attempts per year. This includes pro-active telephone, group and individual counseling.
  • All seven Food and Drug Administration-approved tobacco cessation medications.
  • These benefits must be provided with no copayments or co-insurance and are not subject to deductibles, annual or lifetime dollar limits.

Anyone covered under an FEHB program health plan, which includes covered family members for those with a self and family enrollment, can take advantage of the benefits.

Only those enrolled in an FEHB program health insurance plan may take advantage of these benefits. If you are already enrolled in FEHB you don't need to take any action to begin taking advantage of the new tobacco cessation benefit for 2011.

All active duty, reserves, dependents, retirees, Department of Defense federal employees and contractors are eligible to attend. Federal employees should note that LX leave can be used upon supervisor's approval to attend HAWC classes.
