In an effort to assist the Top of Utah area military community as they transition into the civilian workforce, select Home Depot locations in the area will host two Civilian Career Workshops on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Attendees must register online in advance of the workshops at careers.homedepot.com/military.

The Home Depot, which employs more than 35,000 veterans and active duty military, recognizes the strong skills the military community has to offer -- as well as the challenges that many service men and women face in marketing these abilities to the civilian workforce. The company's human resources professionals, in collaboration with veteran associates, will conduct half-day sessions focused on job search strategies, resume optimization and interview tips that are applicable to a search in most any industry or with most any employer. The workshops are open to any member of the military or veteran transitioning to any civilian career.

The Civilian Career Workshops are part of a larger initiative, dubbed Mission: Transition, aimed at arming U.S. service men and women with the knowledge and resources they need to successfully transition into the civilian workforce.

Brides Across America, Operation Wedding Gown, will salute our troops and honor our heroes this November while making dreams come true for military brides. As part of Brides Across America's commitment to support our troops and veterans, the nonprofit organization will host its sixth annual bridal gown giveaway at salons nationwide. From coast to coast, bridal salons are honoring veterans by giving away free wedding gowns as a thank you for their service to this country. Events are taking place Nov. 6-24. To date, Brides Across America has donated over 8,000 wedding gowns from prominent designers.

In order to qualify, brides or their fiances must be serving in the military; either currently deployed or deployed within the last five years to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Libya or Japan. Brides must pre-register for the event by logging on to Brides Across America's website.

Many military brides find it difficult to plan their dream wedding due to deployment, injury or economic circumstances. Brides Across America founder, Heidi Janson, wants to continue making dreams come true. "My goal is to make sure we don't forget all the servicemen and women overseas fighting for our freedom. It is imperative at this point for Brides Across America to continue growing and make a bigger difference by gaining more support from bridal salons and designers."

Unescorted base visitors, such as relatives coming to visit for a few days or appliance repair technicians, will now go through a criminal background check prior to receiving a pass.

The check is a result of changes in Air Force policy. In order to assist visitors, the South Gate Visitor Control Center is now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The criminal background check and pass are only for unescorted visitors. Base residents that bring in visitors, such as in the same vehicle, may simply escort the visitor in and skip the pass process.

Each person who is authorized to sponsor a visitor, may sponsor up to five guests at a time.

Simply meet the guests at either visitor center on the day of the visit. A criminal background check will be conducted and passes will be issued.

However, if a resident is sponsoring more than five guests, 75 SFS requests that a Visitor Authorization Listing (VAL) be completed and turned in no less than three duty days prior to visit.

VAL's can be sent through an on-base email account at 75SFS.S5SI@Hill.af.mil, or hand delivered to building 408.

Specific information is required to process VAL's: 1) Guest names (alphabetical by last name), 2) Guest's Driver's license number or passport number, 3) Location of Event, 4) Gate(s) of entry, 5) Sponsor's First/Last name, 6) Sponsor's SSN, 7) Sponsor's work & home telephone number, 8) Start/end dates of the event, 9) signed or e-mailed statement from the sponsor accepting responsibility for their unescorted guests while they are on HAFB. 75 SFS cannot approve VAL's during FPCONs Charlie or Delta.

The visitor center anticipates further guidance in the near future and kindly asks residents for their patience and understanding as it implements the new procedures with an overall goal of safety and security of Team Hill.

There will be a job fair July 18 with free registration and a goal of job interviews to happen right there.

Job Interviews Now! is a quarterly job fair program that kicks off July 18, from 9 a.m to 6 p.m to help connect job seekers with Utah's employers. The event is hosted by www.jobsnprofiles.com and will be held at Salt Lake Community College, in the Miller Free Enterprise Center Showroom at 9750 S. 300 West, Sandy.

The job fair is an opportunity for Utah businesses to recruit highly educated, experienced and skilled employees for a number of positions including but not limited to software design, sales managers, accounting managers, health and human service personnel, restaurant managers, business development managers and software engineers. Job Interviews Now! will provide employers a private area or room to conduct on-site interviews and will help match job seekers with positions that best compliment their professional goals.

Employers can register for a free table for the full day, or for any portion of the day.

Though not required, job seekers are encouraged to sign up in advance. Once a job seeker signs up, Job Interviews Now! event staff will help recruit the companies most relevant to a job seeker's skills and industry interests. Participants looking for a job are strongly encouraged to bring their resume and to be prepared for an on-site interview.
